Background & Experience
Sarah Hanson is a credentialed multiple subject teacher, taught middle school math for 6 years in San Francisco (6th, 7th and 8th grade), and has been tutoring individually since 2010. Sarah has attended the following Making Math Real courses at the University of California Berkeley: Overview, 4 Operations, 9 Lines, Time & Money, Fractions/Decimals/Advanced Place-Value, Pre-Algebra, Algebra & Games. Sarah utilizes Making Math Real strategies in her math remediation sessions.
“I work to make learning math fun. I often infuse a game to reinforce a student’s learning so they can enjoy the experience and gain confidence on the concepts they are working on.”
Sarah’s sessions are incrementally built, so that children have a strong foundation of each concept and have space and time needed to excel at each level. These sessions build competency and self-esteem as students see themselves understanding and improving.

Learning Objectives
My goal when working with students is for each client to have a clear understanding of math concepts and have the tools to appropriately and efficiently solve problems. From their initial understanding of simple math concepts, I incrementally build until the student understands complex concepts and is able to solve problems on their own. As I discover where a student has gaps and is struggling in their school work, I start with the basics at their current level and build upon it so that it ensures a solid foundation of understanding and problem solving. I always make sure kids understand what they are doing. This way, students will eventually be successful on their own while doing homework and in class.
I know that students have a diversity of processing styles, and I am able to help meet many of the instructional needs of students by using color coding, working with manipulatives, tapping rhythms, and using images, to name a few.
I seek to make learning math fun. I often incorporate a game or two that reinforces a student’s learning during the session so they are enjoying the experience and gaining confidence on the concepts we work on.
